What is IR35?

Make sense of IR35 and see if it affects you

IR35 is a legislation designed to combat workers who fraudulently claim to be contractors for tax benefits. If you’re a contractor you need to make sure that you’re IR35 compliant. Unfortunately the rules are complex, which makes this confusing.

HMRC do not make it easy to distinguish between contractors and employees, and there are a variety of questions you need to ask to gauge your status. There is no definitive ‘rule’ to IR35 and if you can justify your position you won’t be placed on Payroll as an employee. You can get an idea of how at risk you are from an investigation by taking an IR35 test with our calculator.

This guide goes through all the nuances that will be assessed to determine whether or not you are compliant with the law. Learn about the substitution test, what equipment you should be using and how much involvement you should have with your employer’s corporate business.

“Excellent service, software easy to use, makes doing the accounts enjoyable.” – Raymond Brand, Enlight Electrical Services Limited
